Creative and Critical Papers

Seven submissions in each category will be read at the Francelia Butler Conference.

Guidelines:
Submissions do not have to be work done at Hollins, but must have been written no earlier than June 2007.  Additionally, they are not required to adhere to the year's theme. You may submit one piece of work to each of the two categories, Creative and Critical. Papers that were read at last summer's conference, have been published, or critical papers that have been read at an academic conference are not acceptable. You may submit work that was submitted (but not read) last summer if it has been revised.

All papers should be no longer than 4000 words maximum, which comes to about 15 pages in Courier. You should include your works cited page(s) with your submission, but it does not count towards your page limit. Papers should follow MLA format: Font size 12pt, Courier font, double-spaced pages with 1-inch margins. Pages should also be numbered in the top right corner (1 of 10, 2 of 10, etc.). The winner of each category, as selected by the panel of judges, will receive the Shirley Henn Award, which includes a $100 prize.

The deadline for all submissions is 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 11. There will be a drop-off box for conference submissions outside of Amanda's office.

Artwork

All submitted art will be displayed and judged at the Francelia Butler Conference Art Show.

Guidelines:
While the theme of this year's conference is Dr. Seuss, entries are not required to be related to the conference theme.  All forms of art are accepted for the conference gallery.  Last year participants submitted original works of art in the areas of painting, drawing, sculpture, mixed media and watermelon carving.

At the conference, attendees will have the opportunity to vote on their favorite piece of art.  The winner will receive the Margaret Kates Award which includes a $100 prize.

The deadline date for all art submission forms is by Monday July 14th, 2008.  Submissions may be made electronically by e-mailing a copy of the completed from to jhain@hollins.edu or by dropping the completed form in the student mailbox labeled HAIN.  Please note that only forms are to be left in the mailbox.  Artists need to plan to bring their own work to set up at the VAC on Friday July 18th between the hours of 2pm and 6pm.  If for some reason you cannot make it to hang your own art, please contact Jamie Hain at jhain@hollins.edu to make alternate arrangements.  Artist assumes all responsibility for safety of artwork regardless of who stages the piece.
